A catch-all email address is a special inbox that receives all messages sent to addresses at your domain that do not match any existing mailbox. If someone types [email protected] by mistake, or sends to [email protected] before you have created that account, the catch-all address captures it. DirectAdmin makes configuring this feature simple from within the email management section.
What Is Catch-All Email?
By default, if a message arrives for an email address that does not exist at your domain, the mail server will bounce it back to the sender with a "user does not exist" error. A catch-all address overrides this behavior — instead of bouncing, the server forwards all unmatched messages to a designated inbox or address.
The catch-all feature acts as a safety net, ensuring you never miss an email due to typos, outdated address books, or addresses you have not set up yet. It is especially useful for small businesses and solo entrepreneurs who want one inbox to handle all incoming contact, regardless of what prefix the sender uses.
How Catch-All Works in DirectAdmin
DirectAdmin's catch-all configuration is part of the email management section. You assign a destination — either an existing mailbox on your account or an external email address — and any message sent to a non-existent address at your domain will be redirected there. The mechanism is handled at the mail server level (typically Exim), so no manual filtering rules are required.
Pros and Cons of Catch-All Email
Advantages
- Never miss an email due to sender typos or outdated contact information
- Capture messages sent to old addresses after rebranding
- Useful during email migrations when some addresses may not yet be configured
- Ensures all contact attempts reach you, even if the address is slightly wrong
Disadvantages
- Significantly increases spam volume — spammers often send to random prefixes at known domains
- Can fill your inbox with dictionary-attack spam ([email protected])
- Makes spam filtering harder because the catch-all inbox receives everything
- May cause storage issues if spam volume is high
How to Enable Catch-All in DirectAdmin
- Log in to DirectAdmin and navigate to the E-mail Manager section.
- Click on Catch-All E-mail (sometimes listed as "Default / Catch-All Address").
- You will see a dropdown or radio button options: Bounce, Blackhole (discard silently), or Custom Address.
- Select Custom Address to forward catch-all messages to a specific inbox.
- Enter the destination email address in the field provided. This can be any existing mailbox on your account (e.g.,
[email protected]) or an external address. - Click Save to activate the catch-all configuration.
Forwarding to Another Address
If you want catch-all messages to go to an external address — such as a Gmail or Outlook inbox — simply enter that address as the destination when configuring the catch-all. The mail server will relay the message outbound to the external address. Keep in mind that external forwarding may affect deliverability and spam scoring, as the original sender's domain may not align with your forwarding server's SPF record.
When forwarding externally, consider these additional factors:
- SPF Alignment: The forwarded message will appear to originate from your server, not the original sender. If the original sender's domain has a strict SPF record, the receiving mail server may mark the forwarded message as spam.
- DMARC Policies: Domains enforcing a
p=rejectDMARC policy may cause forwarded messages to be rejected entirely at the external destination. - Spam Volume: Any spam caught by your catch-all will also be forwarded to the external address, potentially filling your Gmail or Outlook inbox with unwanted messages. Consider enabling SpamAssassin on your server to filter spam before forwarding.
- Multiple Destinations: If you need to forward catch-all messages to more than one address, create a real email account first, then use DirectAdmin's Email Forwarders feature — this gives you more granular control over routing.
Understanding the Three Catch-All Modes
DirectAdmin offers three distinct modes for handling unmatched email addresses. Understanding when to use each one is key to keeping your inbox clean:
- Forward to Address: All unmatched messages are delivered to a specified mailbox or external address. Use this when you genuinely want to capture all incoming mail, such as during a domain migration or for a small business with a single inbox.
- Bounce (Reject): The server returns a delivery failure notice to the sender, informing them that the address does not exist. This is the most honest option — senders with incorrect addresses are immediately notified. It also prevents spam from building up silently.
- Blackhole (Discard): Messages are silently accepted and then discarded without any notification to the sender. The advantage is that senders are not informed whether the address exists or not, which can prevent spammers from confirming valid domain targets. However, legitimate senders may never know their message was lost.
For most websites, if you decide to disable catch-all, choosing Bounce is preferable to Blackhole because it maintains honest communication with legitimate senders.
Protecting Your Inbox from Catch-All Spam
Enabling catch-all is a trade-off: you gain peace of mind that no real email is ever lost, but you open the door to a flood of spam. The following strategies help you keep this under control.
Enable SpamAssassin
DirectAdmin hosting at AsiaGB includes SpamAssassin at no extra cost. SpamAssassin scores every incoming message on dozens of criteria. Set the spam score threshold to 5 or 6 to tag suspected spam, and to 8–10 to automatically delete messages that are almost certainly spam. This filtering happens before messages reach your catch-all folder, dramatically reducing the noise.
Use the Block List for Repeat Offenders
If you notice specific domains or senders generating a high volume of spam, add them to the DirectAdmin SPAM Filters block list. Blocking an entire domain (for example, @spambaddomain.xyz) prevents all future messages from that source.
Monitor Catch-All Volume Regularly
Log in to your catch-all mailbox at least once a week to check whether spam volume is growing unmanageable. If your inbox is regularly flooded, consider switching to Bounce mode temporarily while you tighten your SpamAssassin configuration.
Use Role-Based Addresses Instead
If you find catch-all useful mainly for receiving mail to a few common aliases like info@, support@, or sales@, create those as proper email accounts or forwarders instead. This way you only receive mail for addresses you actually publish, without the spam risk of a catch-all.
How to Disable Catch-All
To disable catch-all email in DirectAdmin, return to the Catch-All E-mail settings and select either Bounce (returns an error to the sender) or Blackhole (silently discards unmatched messages). Most server administrators prefer Bounce so that senders with incorrect addresses are notified immediately rather than having their messages silently disappear.
Spam Warning: Enabling catch-all email is a common spam magnet. Spammers run automated scripts that send messages to thousands of random-prefix addresses at known domains. Once your catch-all is active, you may receive a large volume of unwanted mail. Always pair catch-all with a robust spam filter such as SpamAssassin, and consider disabling it if spam becomes unmanageable.
