How DNS propagation works
When you change a DNS record it does not take effect everywhere instantly — it spreads gradually based on each record's TTL.
TTL sets the speed
Time To Live (TTL) tells resolvers how many seconds to cache a value. The lower the TTL, the faster a new value spreads when you change it.
Resolvers aren't in sync
Google, Quad9, OpenDNS and others clear their cache at different times, so some show the new value while others still serve the old one during the transition.
Plan before you change
Lower the TTL to 300 seconds a day before an important change so the new DNS propagates faster and downtime is minimised.
Verify before you finish
Don't shut down the old server until most resolvers point to the new value. This tool confirms that for you before you decide.

What is DNS propagation?
The time it takes for a DNS record change to spread to resolvers worldwide. When you edit a record such as an IP or nameserver, each DNS server keeps the old value cached until its TTL expires, so some users see the new value and some still see the old one.
How long does DNS take to propagate?
Usually 1–24 hours, depending on the previous TTL. A low TTL (e.g. 300 seconds) is quick; a high TTL (86400 seconds = one day) takes longer. Registry-level nameserver changes can take up to 48 hours.
Why do resolvers show different answers?
Each resolver caches values for different lengths of time. Some have just refreshed and show the new value, while others still hold the old one until the TTL expires. This tool queries many resolvers at once to give the full picture.
How can I make DNS propagate faster?
Lower the TTL in advance — for example to 300 seconds a day before the change — so resolvers worldwide update quickly when you switch. Raise the TTL back once it has fully propagated.
